Phoenix Decom, a leading specialist in decommissioning, waste management, and offshore services, is making waves at Lerwick Harbour’s Greenhead Base with its innovative approach and significant investments. Since establishing operations at the Shetland port last year, Phoenix has demonstrated its commitment to enhancing the region’s decommissioning capabilities while contributing to the local economy.

Expanding Decommissioning Expertise
Phoenix Decom’s work at Lerwick has already yielded impressive results. Recently, the company completed the processing of 13.5 kilometres (740 tonnes) of subsea mooring ropes. The project was carried out at its state-of-the-art facility, which features a 2,400-square-meter heavy-duty pad developed by Lerwick Port Authority. Delivered in four shipments over 16 days, the project utilised cutting-edge equipment, including a new material handler and mobile shear unit—part of a £1 million investment by Phoenix in its Lerwick operations.
Craig Smith, Managing Director of Phoenix Decom, highlighted the advantages of the strategic location: “Expanding into Lerwick is opening new opportunities for us. The local supply chain and skilled workforce have been instrumental in completing these projects and attracting further work. The industry recognises the benefits of Lerwick as a hub for decommissioning.”
Investing in Lerwick’s Future
Phoenix Decom’s investment at Greenhead Base includes not only advanced equipment but also a decontamination system designed to enhance safety and minimise environmental impact. This aligns with the company’s mission to provide integrated solutions for decommissioning and waste management while adhering to strict environmental standards.
The site has already facilitated two major projects exceeding 5,000 tonnes in weight, with over 1,000 tonnes of concrete mattresses successfully recycled and reused. In another ongoing project, three shipments of up to 500 tonnes of concrete mattresses, grout, and steelwork are being delivered for processing this month, further solidifying the company’s reputation for excellence.

A Collaborative Effort with Lerwick Port Authority
The Lerwick Port Authority has been a key partner in Phoenix Decom’s success, providing critical infrastructure and support. Captain Calum Grains, Chief Executive of Lerwick Port Authority, commented: “The facilities and services at Lerwick continue to evolve to meet the decommissioning sector’s growing demands. Phoenix’s investment and activities are a significant addition to the port’s capabilities.”
The new heavy-duty pad at Greenhead Base is one of three licensed decommissioning pads at Lerwick, further reinforcing the port’s status as a leader in managing offshore decommissioning waste from the North Sea and Atlantic. Lerwick decommissioning continues to grow as the industry increasingly recognises the advantages of the port’s strategic location.
Driving Local Growth in Shetland
Beyond the technical achievements, Phoenix Decom’s presence in Lerwick is creating opportunities for the local workforce and supply chain. As the company continues to expand its decommissioning operations in Shetland, it is actively recruiting locally, ensuring that its growth directly benefits the Shetland community.
“Our new base adds to our growing business and strengthens the relationships we have built with the local supply chain in Lerwick,” said Smith. “We are committed to sustainable practices and creating jobs that support the local economy.”
A Bright Future for Lerwick Decommissioning
Phoenix Decom’s ongoing investments and successful projects underscore its commitment to setting new standards in decommissioning, waste management, and offshore services. With its cutting-edge operations and collaborative approach, the company is well-positioned to meet the growing demands of the industry while contributing to Lerwick’s reputation as a premier decommissioning hub.
